District Leadership Seminar

Following the Bak Maha Ulela on 2nd May, morning (9.30a.m. to 2.00p.m.) there will be the District Leadership Seminar from 3.00p.m. to 5.50p.m.. The purpose of the District Leadership Seminar is to motivate Rotarians in the District to serve Rotary beyond the Club level.
Discussion topics will include:
• Leadership opportunities in the District
• District meetings/ seminars
• International service projects (Sponsor or Host District)
• Program electives (RI and TRF)

Rotaractor's to Raise Funds to Eradicate Polio

Nearly 10 Rotaract Clubs have come together to raise funds for the Rotary Polio Eradication effort. They have obtained the Premier Night (7.00p.m.) Show of Slumdog Millionaire.

Future Vision Plan overview - In anticipation of The Rotary Foundation’s 100-year anniversary in 2017, the Trustees set out to develop a plan to move the Foundation toward its second century of service. The plan updates the Foundation’s mission and creates a more effective and efficient way to help Rotarians develop diverse projects with greater impact and sustainable outcomes.

The mission of TRF of RI is "To enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty".The Foundation's new mission, along with its new motto "Doing Good in the World" were approved by the Foundation Trustees and the RI Board and endorsed by the Council on Legislation.

The Future Vision Plan (click on it) is designed to:

* Simplify TRF programs and processes consistent with the mission

* Focus service efforts where they will have the greatest impact by addressing priority world needs that are relevant to Rotarians

* Offer program options to help achieve both global and local goals

RI - Best Coorperative Project Award

Rotary clubs also sometimes work in concert with local governments, businesses, and other organizations to bring much needed improvements to people and communities both at home and abroad. In that spirit, Rotary International recognizes club service projects, done with other organizations, with the Best Cooperative Project Award. The award honors clubs that have increased awareness and understanding of Rotary by working with other organizations.

Eligible projects must be service activities that address a humanitarian need. Winning projects will receive a special certificate and may be included in future Rotary publications/publicity materials.

Bill Gates made an Honorary Member

Bill Gates, cochair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was made an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Seattle during the club's centennial celebration 5 March, 2009. More than 1,000 Rotarians and community leaders attended the event, to pay tribute to the club's 100 years of service. Gates, Microsoft cofounder and chair, delivered the keynote address.

"As Rotary spread across the globe, so did the principle of Service Above Self," he said. "Rotary provides the infrastructure for scaling up one of the best ideas that human beings ever had: that helping others is not just a duty -- it's fun and rewarding." William Gates Sr., also an honorary member of the Seattle club and Gates Foundation cochair, attended the event and helped fasten a Rotary pin to his son's lapel.

Earlier this year, Bill Gates attended Rotary's International Assembly in San Diego, California, to announce a new grant of $255 million from the Gates Foundation to support Rotary's efforts to eradicate polio. That was in addition to the $100 Mil Gates Foundation challenge grant awarded to Rotary in 2007. The total matching effort in response is called Rotary's US$200 Mil Challenge, which must be completed by 30 June 2012. Together, Rotary and the Gates Foundation have committed $555 Mil in the fight to end polio.

Seattle club president Nancy Sclater said the club has fully embraced Rotary's efforts to eradicate Polio, "We absolutely must finish ensuring that polio never affects anyone again". Sclater also looked ahead to the club's second century of service. Its centennial project will create a support center for homeless families at a cost of $4.2 million. The Seattle club is Rotary's fourth oldest and one of its largest, with nearly 700 members.

Matching Grant Budget - Update

Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation have had to make important decisions in light of the current financial environment. At the January Trustees meeting, a decision was made to reduce the 2008-09 Matching Grant budget in order to conserve The Rotary Foundation's World Fund. As of 2 March, the Matching Grant budget has been fully committed, and the Trustees are unable to approve any additional grant applications.

As a result of the budget reductions, no new Matching Grant applications will be accepted in the 2008-09 Rotary year. New applications received by the Foundation will be returned to the sponsors without processing. Applications that were received by the Foundation before the commitment of the available budget will remain at the Foundation and can move forward for processing in the 2009-10 Rotary year. Humanitarian Grants staff are in the process of notifying the sponsors of these applications, and their district leadership, of these updates.

If you have in the meantime sent a MG application you will receive a letter from TRF stating that you have a MG application that was completed after the budget was fully committed and is unable to be approved at this time. The primary sponsors of the application have 3 options to consider in moving forward with their application:
Option 1) Your application is complete and may be forwarded for approval after 1 August 2009 contingent upon any decisions by the Trustees at their April 2009 meeting with regard to the MG budget.
Option 2) Should you no longer wish to pursue this application, please inform your Grant Coordinator as soon as possible, and your application will be withdrawn.
Option 3) There is one other funding option available, should you and your partners wish to move forward with your project in the 2008-09 Rotary year. Sponsors may request that DDF be used in place of the requested award amount from the Foundation. If you wish to pursue this option please complete the DDF substitution form stating the DDF contributions from the district(s) and the required authorizations needed to fund the project award. This information must be provided and the application must be completed by 30 April 2009 in order to move the grant forward for approval this Rotary year. Please note that only DDF can be used in lieu of the TRF award amount.<>

District Simplified Grants - For Small Projects

We kindly request each Club to forward a small project proposal for possible funding from the District Simplified Grant (DSG) available to our District. The DSG amount awarded towards the Club project will be a maximum of Rs.50,000/- per Club as we hope to pass on the benefit to at least 15 Clubs. The total amount of DSG funds available for 2008-9 is Rs.734, 958/-. Please note: The Club too must include a minimum of Rs.10,000/- towards the project.

The new ProjectLINK Submission Form: Project/s Seeking Support is now available for registering international service projects for posting on ProjectLINK. The new form replaces the World Community Service Project Data Form and the Rotary Volunteers International Volunteer Site Registration Form.

ProjectLINK (clik on it) is an online, searchable database listing Rotary Club and District community service projects in need of funding, volunteers, and donated goods. Rotarians can also list projects to find partners for a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant, and model projects that can be used as examples of best practices.

104 Sets of Library Books for Schools

On 22 Feb., at the time of the 18th Rotary District Conference (A day before Rotary's 104th Birth Anniversary) Rotary Clubs were requested to collect upto 4 sets of Library books each that had been put together and presented to us by The Asia Foundation. The English Library books are to be given to English speaking needy schools. Each set is worth Rs.20,000/- (nearly 50 Books in each set). The total of 5,000 books/ 104 Sets are worth approx. Rs.2 Mil. Clubs paid a token contribution of Rs.1,000/- per set obtained.

Unprecedented Conference lead-up publicity, an inspirational RI President's Representative with demonstrated leadership, wisdom & good counsel in IPDG. Aziz Memon, motivational & informative break-out sessions, a fantastic gala beach fiesta/ fellowship, selected plenary session & keynote speakers, varied GSE presentations, great project panel displays, elegant gift pack, an idyllic Conference venue with sumptuous food and a "Thank you Rotary" song truly added colour. Over 90% of the Clubs registered. Except for the Conference opening session (particularly the acoustics) and some time over-runs, there is very little that we would do differently. US$255 Million Grant for Ending Polio - Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded US$255 Mil to Rotary International in the global effort to eradicate polio, bringing the total committed by Rotary and the Gates Foundation to $555 Mil.

Shortly after meeting with incoming district governors from the four countries where the wild poliovirus is endemic - Afghanistan, India, Nigeria & Pakistan - Bill Gates announced the new grant on 21st Jan., at the International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA.

“Rotarians, government leaders and health professionals have made a phenomenal commitment to get us to a point at which polio afflicts only a small number of the world’s children,” Gates said. “However, complete elimination of the poliovirus is difficult and will continue to be difficult for a number of years. Rotary in particular has inspired my own personal commitment to get deeply involved in achieving eradication.”

The two Gates Foundation challenge grants now total $355 Mil. Rotary International’s matching effort in response is called Rotary’s US$200 Mil Challenge, which must be completed by 30 June 2012. Read more.

RI Exchange Rate to be Revised in January

From 1 January '09 the current RI exchange rate: 1 US$ = LKR 108/- will be revised to 1 US$ = LKR 110/- (SL Rupees 110.00 = US$1).

Therefore, pay your RI Dues (SARs) & make your TRF Contributions to the Fiscal Agent - PDG Krish, preferably by 30 December, 2008.

Each of the Teams will be comprised of a Rotarian Team Leader and Four (4) Team members between 25-40 years who represent a profession/ vocation. The Rotary Clubs/ Rotarians must Home Host the visiting GSE Teams so as to provide an opportunity for the visitors to experience our culture and life style. Vocational visits too need to be organized.
